China - Part 1

2004-10-19

Monday, 9/20/04

We're finally on our way, well, sort of. At the boarding gate at least. For the last few weeks the trip has seemed both imminent and infinitely far away. Each step closer half the size of the previous step. Not matter how close it got, it still seemed like we would never leave. We still have an hour and a half until boarding.

Dad is running around, trying to gather his flock, make sure everyone is going to end up in the same place.

The plane pretty much left on time. A fourteen hour flight spent all in darkness. Well have had close to eighteen hours of darkness before we see the sun again. Weve been following night around the globe. Kind of weird.

I give Korean Airlines points for attentiveness. They came around with something almost every hour. They brought around cups of juice at least six times. And hot towels once it was nominally morning.

Real sleep was almost impossible, but I did doze. For some reason when Im in that state all the people around me that are speaking Korean suddenly seem to be speaking English.

We had a five hour layover in Seoul. The amusements available in an airport are limited. So far the most entertaining thing weve found is a machine in the ladies room called a Etiquette Bell. It makes a noise like a flushing toilet. Were going on the theory that it provides cover for any bodily noises made while using the toilet. Okaaay.

They also have cute little electric mop carts, with wide mop heads fore and aft. They buzz all over the place and then the people pushing regular mops come along after them. Cant fault these people for cleanliness.

Philippine Airways is determined to leave no passenger behind. The clerk kept running down the concourse yelling what I assume is the equivalent of Final boarding. They rushed person after person on board. The final person to arrive was a young woman with a baby bound to her back. They grabbed her carryon and ran on board with it and her. Would that all airlines looked after you that well.
